trying to restore but iphone wont turn on??

hi, i bought a iphone 3gs that is running on the ios 4 software but im trying to get it unlocked but i need to resotre it to the old firmware first!
it keeps coming up with the error once trying to restore and now its not even turning on at all??
any ideas?
