I have an 11" Macbook Air 6,1 -- bought it new, customized it to have 8gb ram. It's a great computer and I've gotten a lot of use out of it. That's not really the computer I'm asking about today.

I recently upgraded the SSD in my computer to 1 TB. Backed it up in Time Machine, switched out, started back up and recovered from the Time Machine backup. Seems to have worked ok.

When I was buying the SSD, there was the option of buying a kit with an enclosure, to make the old SSD into an external drive. But for the $40 that it would cost to get the kit instead of just the SSD, I figured I could buy a spare computer and get it running with the SSD. Worth a a shot, anyway. So that's the computer I'm working on now.

Found a very similar 11" Macbook Air on ebay, with no SSD installed. Pics showed it starting up to the internet recovery screen, so it wasn't dead & the screen worked. So I bought it.

Came in yesterday, and I plugged it in to my magsafe2 charger. Green light, then sensing the battery charge, switched to orange. So far, so good.

I put in the SSD and started up in recovery mode; tried to reinstall big sur. Got on my home wifi, no problem, and the install started. Battery percentage, in the corner of the screen, was steadily increasing. The installer said 2 hours+ remaining, so I stepped away. Checked back ~10 minutes later and it said something like 1 hour 25 minutes. Ok, fine; I stepped away again. Looked like it was going ok.

Checked back a few minutes later and the screen was black, computer wouldn't wake up -- nothing. Left it alone, to see if it was just going through a restart cycle or something... maybe another 10 minutes of nothing. I unplugged the power supply briefly -- it had its orange light still on -- and then plugged it back in. But when I plugged it back in, it didn't light up at all.

And that's where I am, about 12 hours later. Computer is unresponsive -- power button does nothing, plugging in the power supply does nothing (have tested 2 different power supplies; both work fine on my original computer but no response on the salvage machine).

I have tried various key combos -- SMC reset, Pram reset, can't remember what else. But no reaction at all.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Things to try, things to look for? Good troubleshooting guides or anything like that?

Thanks for your help.

A little about me -- I'm an Apple guy since before Mac; my first computer was a ][+. I have worked on my computers a bit over the years, resoldered some bits on the motherboard of my white plastic macbook to get a little more life out if it... I forget what the issue was but I think it was a common one for the model. I like to tinker with all kinds of things and computers are no different. This salvage machine is just another project, something to play with.

I tried unplugging the battery, and plugging in the charger. The fan didn't spin up, and I waited maybe 10 minutes... no reaction from the MBA.

No light on the magsafe charger.

If it is possible that the unit was exposed to moisture, carefully examine the moisture indicator on the various boards inside the unit and they will be red if exposed.

Since there is no light on the MagSafe charger, it's possible that the charging board is damaged.

Did you try shorting the power-up pads (https://beetstech.com/blog/macbook-air-power-pads) on the logic board?

No, I didn't know about the power-up pads. That's interesting -- thank you!

I sort of suspect the charging board, too. But I will try whatever tests I can manage before I start buying parts.

Moisture indicators don't show anything -- they look white. Power-up pads don't do anything.

Replacement i/o board had no effect. At this point, probably the logic board itself?

It's frustrating -- it literally worked out of the box, but crashed (?) or stopped functioning while reinstalling Mac OS. And since then, pretty much inert.

Only other thing I can suggest is to disconnect the keyboard, trackpad, battery, and connect the MagSafe.

The leads from the power button in the keyboard go through the keyboard and trackpad so there may be a fault in the circuit.
