I have a Penryn 15" MBP which no longer boots OSX. It has gone through a few phases in the last couple of days, always taking awhile to load either the apple logo + circle loader or the dreaded question mark folder.
I have inserted the first Leopard install disc and it boots the Apple logo to the OSX installer after 5-10 minutes. When I view Disk Utility here, my HD shows up with the correct available space and # of folders. This leads me to believe I can still salvage the data. My first question is whether I should run the verify/repair permission options here.
I also have tried target mode, using a 6-pin to 9-pin cable with the host computer being a unibody 13" MBP. The Penryn boots up into target mode with a gray background but the drive does not mount to desktop, nor does it show up in the unibody's Disk Utility. There is an unknown device in the Firewire section of the System Profiler, although I am not sure this is my MBP. Side question here is whether I need to get the install disc out of the bad MBP's drive during target mode. I would guess this would be preferable but it won't let me eject the disc from Disk Utility as it says the Leopard installer is still running. I have also tried changing the startup disc to Macintosh HD, but this also boots the installer.
I am wondering if the data on MBP can still be recovered as it appears to still show the correct contents when running Disk Utility from the Leopard install disk. Do I need to purchase some kind of software or is there a way to maybe force the drive to mount? Maybe try targetting with another Penryn? Also, I wonder whether or not I will have to get a new hard drive no matter what, or if a reinstall of OSX may fix the problem. Thanks for any help in advance.
