happened to notice my internal drive only has 115gb of space. not a stress but wondered what was taking up all the space as most docs and stuff are on external drive.

when I go into my users folder, it says 594.71GB
inside that there's
Shared 55.45GB
(name of my admin username) 549.57GB

when I go into my admin username's folder, the only user name I have..
theres Pictures 39.13gb
documents 15.99gb
movies 3.56gb

and a few other folders adding up to basically 2gb

Actually in the time I've taken to writing this my user s folder is now 617gb. what's going on???

From Terminal:

Code:
cd
du -h .

You might be missing hidden folders.

If 115gb is < 20% the size of your disk then you need to start deleting things to avoid potential problems.

There are a number of utilities which will help in determining what is using your disk space, such as DaisyDisk:

Download DiskWave from here:
https://diskwave.barthe.ph
It's small in size and free.

Open DiskWave and go to the preferences.
Put a checkmark in "show invisible files".
Close preferences.

The DiskWave window shows you all your drives in plain English (no ridiculous graphical formats).
Click on the internal drive.
Now, you'll see what's ON the drive, listed in order of "largest to smallest".
You can easily locate what's eating up your space.

What is it?
