Trying to transfer data from old iPhone to new one

Hi Folks

My buddy has a 3G iPhone he dropped and busted beyond repair (screen smashed etc.)

So he bought a new one.

Anybody know the best way to transfer the data from the old one to the new one, probably without writing over the data that has been input into the new one already.

I think there was some software that could do this but I can't remember the name.

Restore it from the latest backup all your info will go on the new phone

But what about the data on the new phone. There has been new information put onto that and if I do a restore all that info will disappear. So I guess I'm asking if there is a way to transfer old data to a new phone without restoring it.

The only ways I can think of involves jailbreaking the phone, and even then, there's no way to merge two separate datasets for the same app. So restoring from your old backup and reentering the data you entered into your new phone would likely be the least hassle.

which apps?

On your new phone, which apps have you entered data that you need to sync?
There are some ways to handle syncing for some iPhone apps, and depending on which other apps you have, there are some tools to handle it.
