Trying to unlock 1st generation iPhone

I bought a first generation iPhone from a friend. When I turn it on, it says I have to connect it to iTunes to activate it. I have AT&T, but I do not want to buy a data plan since I am in an area where wi-fi is abundant. AT&T was no help since they require a data plan.

My old iPhone worked without the data plan, but it's screen started having problems (another post), so there is no issue with using an iPhone on AT&T without a data plan.

How should I go about this? I unlocked my previous phone with ZiPhone, should I do the same?

No ziphone, that's for firmware released a few years ago. Look for redsnow.
Jb and unlock. Then block data.

Yes, update to the latest 3.1.3 thru itunes and then JB and unlock it with Redsnow.

Finally, dont forget to change root and mobile passwords as I am figuring out the hard way the problems it can cause.
