A strong earthquake has shaken New Zealand, generating a small tsunami and briefly putting the country on alert.

The US said a 7.8-magnitude quake hit off the south-west tip of New Zealand, 161km (100 miles) west of Invercargill at a depth of 33km.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii detected a small tsunami and issued a warning for New Zealand.
BBC.

I live on the west coast of Canada, part of the ring of fire. When the radio alarm clock goes off at 6:00am, and the news starts off with "The Tsunami alert for the west coast has been cancelled." Well - that tends to be more effective at getting me out of bed than the usual news coming out of Ottawa... :)

The US earthquake centre in Hawaii reported it to be 7.8, but the local seismic centres in NZ reported it at 6.6. That makes me wonder how there could be such a big difference. Although the NZers should know better than the Hawaiians what's happening in their back yard.

There was an earthquake here? I didn't feel a thing :p

I actually heard about it this morning. GeoNet is listing it as "updated" at 7.8.
