Ok, I wanted to rip tv shows and movies from DVD to watch on my ipod and television. I first went down the handbrake route which would take me a day just to convert one show. I then coughed up $30 for quicktime pro which produced exactly the same results. Finally got hold of an Elgato Turbo .264 which looked like the solution but was very disappointed with the quality and lack of two pass encoding - file sizes tend to be much larger too.

What I want to know is what setup have you guys got that you're happy with. Which mac can keep up with the turbo .264 and still give me the flexibility of custom encoding. Also, do you think using quicktime to encode using the turbo (it now appears as an option in the quicktime menu) is better than simply using the elgato software that comes with the device? Finally, why oh why once i've converted my ipod video does it still have to be converted in itunes to be playable on ipod? Surely when I select ipod high quality when encoding means it is being converted into a format that works on ipod??!! so far i've spent weeks encoding and tons of money and feel like i've wasted my time.

Using mac mini, 1.42.
