turn a contract free verizon iphone into an ipod touch

Hello, I was wondering if anybody has tried buying an iphone 4 cdma version without a contract and then turning it into an ipod touch by hacktivating or by some other way? Why would I want to do this? Because apple still hasn't come out with an Ipod touch with the kind of camera I'm wanting(3 to 5 mpxl range). I currently have a ipod touch 2g and I'm thinking about upgrading, but I was disappointed apple didn't up the camera on the new one they announced today.
So I was thinking about this as another option.
