I was writing a thread asking if this was possible when I figured it out myself. This is really useful if you hate Stacks like me, so I thought I'd share.
I think Stacks are a "form over function" thing. Folders that I have Stacks for typically have very many files, and individual files are hard to locate quickly. (Downloads, Applications, my projects, etc..)
What you can do is right click on some folder and "Make Alias", and then drag the Alias into the Stacks area. Now when you click on those Alias Stacks, it opens the folder in a new Finder window instead of the Stack.
How brilliant is that?
I've done it to my Downloads folder, which has 150+ files in it, and because they are all sorted by "Date Modified", I can find what I need quickly.
