Turn OFF apple remote sensor

Is there a way to turn off the remote sensor on my macbook and be able to turn in on again later? I have my Ipod and Ipod dock on my desk right next to my macbook and when i try to use the remote for the Ipod my macbook picks up signal from the remote to. Its annoying!!!!!!!

Yes, it's in the security section under system preferences (at the bottom).
