I am actually running this JScreenFix utility on a new monitor to get rid of a stuck pixel, but I don't really want to leave its backlight on all the time while it is basically doing nothing.

Is it possible for OS X to turn off the backlight but keep the screen running so the panel can continue to "work out" without taxing the light tubes?

If you turn the brightness all the way down, doesn't the backlight go off?

Hit the F1 button brightness down until the screen goes dark. The screen is still on because you can still see faint images on the screen if you are in the right light and look hard enough and the backlight will be off.

Erm isn't that for Macbook and Macbook Pros only?

I tried it and it did nothing.

Blah. nevermind,.

Is there no buttons on the monitor that can adjust these settings? And result in the backlight turning off?

You can turn the brightness down using the F14 key (F15 to turn it up again), at least that's how it works on my Mac Pro + 20" ACD. At the lowest brightness the backlight doesn't go off, though.
