turn off iPad screen when connected to tv

Hi,

I 'd like to know if there is any way to turn off the screen when i have the ipad connected to a tv (apple digital av adapter). For save bettery life purpose.

Its the new ipad (3rd gen).

i'm pretty sure this isn't possible. just turn the brightness all the way down (should suffice in a dark room)
the iPad should be able to watch a few movies under one charge (haven't tested it, but i think apple mentions ~ 5-6 hours of movie playback)...
