Yes, that's right, turnoff that blaring, jolting, musical intro "TAAA DAAAAA !!!!!", so I never hear it again.

Whoever set that one up should be shot.

Hmm. I've always liked the start-up chord. Obviously not blaring each time, but with the alert volume kept to a sensible low level it seems to imply that the machine is happy, healthy, and 'ready to come out to play'.
I believe in OS 9 one was able to assign sound files at startup, shutdown etc, but don't believe this is possible in OS X - not that I've ever wanted to.

Someone clearly did not listen to Agnes, because she is the queen of jolting noises.

I have headphones permanently plugged into the headphone socket. It technically isn't silent, but unless you have them on, you can't hear it.
