Using newest version of El Capitan on Macbook (2016 release)
I cannot turn off the start up chime.
Followed instructions on command for terminal window using
sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%80

I entered password and shut down (completely) the Macbook.
Nothing happened !
Anybody have any ideas?
 
How often do you fresh sesh?

I'm a perennial sleeper haha! My uptime is running to 46 days right now.

I know some people ( @Gawjuz ) love a good fresh sesh every hour or so!

The simplest thing to do is to turn off the Mac's sound using the f10 key before you shut down. Then there will be no chime when you start up.
 
Onyx has a setting for that, also...with a caveat:
