So my dad just got a new iPhone, and they put his contacts from his old phone directly onto the phone. If he turns on iCloud, it says it will merge his contacts with iCloud. Will that blow away the contacts on the phone, because there's currently no contacts in iCloud? I know people have had problems with this, so I want to do it the right way.

Merge means take things from multiple sources and put them together. So the answers to your question is no.

Exactly this happened to me. I merged my iPhone with iCloud for the first time. There is no other device synced with that account, ie it was empty. My contacts are now empty too. What to do? Where are my contacts?!
