There is a button on the lock screen to make it a digital photo frame, and I maintain the albums in iPhoto.

Why wouldn't they? Nearly every other stock Apple-provided app on the iPad or iPhone has competing versions in the app store. Not to mention very few user-developed apps hurt Apple.

While I haven't yet used the built-in slideshow on my iPad, no question others can create "better" ones (I do not know if THIS app is a "better" one and never will). That's a major reason behind the App stores basic concept.
