Anyone else notice how much less vibrant and bright the screen gets when you turn HDR on? Am I missing another setting somewhere? Almost prefer 4K without the HDR at this point.

Which TV? The Samsung KS8000 does this, but all you have to do is increase the backlight to +10 and it’ll be fine.

same issue on my Samsung KS8000, everything is very dim unless it's actual HDR content. Even the entire Apple TV menu :(

I switched back to 4K SDR for consistency. HDR on Apple TV is a complete mess.

Yup. 65" Sammy KS panel here too. I'm not talking about the actual content playing. The WHOLE menu system goes dim. I shouldn't have to +10 my backlight just to play something in HDR and then have to fix it after... Not excited.

I have a ks8000 too, I set the ATV4k to 4K hdr 60hz, is that where I should be?
Also, I didn’t notice the tv getting darker at all, what mode are you using? Standard dynamic natural or movie?
And last, when playing despicable me the Samsung tv never said “now playing hdr content” I don’t even know if I’m on hdr since the tv remote has like 4 buttons and no display button to see what’s going on.
Thanks!

That’s an issue with the KS8000. I just set all my inputs as HDR and put backlight to +10 and it’s fine.

That's the thing. Backling to +10 on the PS4 and DTV aren't ok from a calibration standpoint.

Then get a new TV. Look I understand where you’re coming from, but that’s what Samsung decided to do. I don’t know why, but they did. It looks fine to me with +10. Regular Brightness is just at 50 though, I never messed with that.

So I should get a new TV because Apple decided to make their newest hardware not work correctly? Got it.

It doesn't do it with my PS4 HDR/4K content.

Look, I'm not trying to be argumentative, but the ATV is the only one who dims the **** out of the image.

Hmm, then idk. Are your other inputs in HDR mode? If all else fails, you can always set the picture separately for each input.

This is no way a Samsung TV issue. It doesn't happen with any other HDR content from any other device that I have which supports HDR.

It really dumb the way Apple implemented HDR here. Everything else I've ever used does SDR and AUTOMATICALLY switches to HDR when HDR content is detected... After, switches back to SDR.

That’s exactly how it should work, why apple didn’t implement it like that is beyond me...

Just look on these boards, this is a common issue across the board. Compensating on the TV itself is foolish for two reasons;
1. When actual HDR content is being displayed on the Apple TV the ‘+10’ Setting you recommend is not required.
2. When people switch their sources through an audio visual receiver to get the best sound possible you change the setting for all sources; i.e. that setting affects also the UHD Player, Satellite Receiver, Games Console etc...

The problem here is Apple forcing non HDR content to be displayed as HDR...It is stupid beyond believe...

If they did implement their UI in HDR, then it makes sense that the HDR mode is permanently activated on TV.
Maybe Apple was again looking past current state-of-the-art, into the future where SDR content has been retired for good?
In the big picture, it will be the future, as SDR is tech from 1930-s :)

If they implemented it then yet I agree, looking at the icons etc it is quite clearly notable that they haven't...

This stuff is very simple - if it is HDR then please switch to the relevant flavour mode of HDR but if it isn't don't...And don't force material that is Dolby vision into standard HDR if the set allows for Dolby Vision, likewise with HLG and standard HDR...

This is a great discussion.

I own a Samsung KS8500. Like others, having HDR enabled for all content looks rough. What’s interesting however is that having Apple TV outputting 4K SDR 60hz looks phenomenal. Compared to the awful upscaling from the Nvidia shield and Roku I am thrilled.

If there was only a way to automatically switch based on the content that would be outstanding.

In hdr mode, it has to be 20 with backlight, otherwise you won’t reach the 1000 nits hdr is about. Check the many Samsung calibration forums

When I got my tv a year ago, i've been researching this a lot.

I use these settings:

Set "Picture Mode" to "Movie"

Backlight and Brightness will automatically be set to these values when HDR signal is detected:
"Backlight": 20
"Brightness": 100

Set "Color Space" to "Auto"

Set "Smart LED" to "High"

Set "Dynamic Contrast" to "Medium" (or "Low")

Set "Sharpness" to max 15.

That’s an issue with the KS8000. I just set all my inputs as HDR and put backlight to +10 and it’s fine.

This is strange because when a Samsung KS is switched to HDR mode the Backlight goes to the maximum (20) automatically. That's how it works when I watch an UHD Bluray or play a HDR game on the ps4 pro. My aTV 4K should arrive in 1-2 days so I'm curious how it works.
