Well there is obviously no power button (that I can see) on the unit, so whats the story? Just leave it on? I read somewhere you can put it into standbye mood by pressing play for a few seconds (like the old ipods i believe) - but what does this mean? Can it still sync with my mac like this? Or should I just leave it on permanently?

You can put it into standby buy holding down the play/pause button while in the main menu.
During standby it continues to download updates...
I turn mine off by going into standby and then flicking a switch on the power strip.
I've heard of others connect it to their stereo receiver's switched outlet.
