Turning It Off

How do I turn off (if possible) the feature that shows the last items opened in a previous session of some applications.
Went into Preview, MSW and Excel, changed it there.
Still opened up the last work in all applications.

if so, to turn it off go into system preferences, general and untick the box and the bottom for restore windows
