macOS Turning off document re-load

I'm helping write an update to the ODBCKit, and one thing I'd like to touch before I release is to have a Preference to turn off auto-reload of open documents. This feature doesn't make much sense in the "scratchpad" sort of environment of a SQL query.

Can someone point me to a starting point?
