Turning off edge in iphone 3G

Hello,
I have this strange problem, i have iphone 3G and my "enable 3G" is always turned off and so is "Data roaming" but i have this "E" icon next to my carrier name that is always turned on and its eating my phone bills without actually using it. Can anyone tell me how to turn this 'edge' function off?

You can't have 3G and EDGE turned off. You have to have one or the other on, unless you don't want to receive any calls or data. If that is the case, use Airplane Mode.

You can turn off data completely (but keep voice) by using this site-

If you don't use something like this, the iPhone will still send/receive data even if you're not using Safari/email. For example, it uses data for the visual voicemail feature.

Note that turning off data will also turn off visual voicemail, your voicemail will then work like a regular cell phone.
