I have my 2009 iMac hooked to a 42' tv via mini display to hdmi and I would like to shut the main display off and use the tv as the main monitor.

Maybe CTRL+OPTION+EJECT can help, but it may shut off the external TV too and even if it works, any mouse movement or keyboard entry will awake the iMac screen.
Maybe MRoogle can help you?

Yeah either way as separate or mirrored displays ctrl+shift+eject turns both off. I'm using an iPad with rowmote to control the iMac so I dont need a mouse hooked to the iMac once I get te main display off.
