Using Catalina 10.15.4 on a MacBook Pro 16" 2019 , and iOS 12 on a iPhone 5s.

I've turned off Messages notification sounds on my new MBP because I only want notification sounds on my iPhone, however when I turn them off on my MBP, my iPhone automatically stops making notification sounds too, even though my iPhone has its notification sounds setting clearly turned on. (my iPhone won't even vibrate any more either; the only 'notification' I get is the screen lighting up/turning on)

Well I don't want Messages notification sounds turned off on both devices - I only want them OFF on my MacBook, and to remain ON on my iPhone like always. How do I achieve this? Should be dead simple but I'm unable to see or find a way.

(this issue occurs with other apps too [like Mail], not just Messages, but I'm using Messages as an example as it's the priority for me to be properly notified.)

And is this a bug or an intended feature? I'm new to modern macOS so I'm not sure (recently upgraded from a 2008 MacBook), but after some reading I feel like this may be part of Apple's "Continuity" features...? I'd really like to be able to control my device's notifications independently, though.

Thank you for any assistance
