Before my MacBook Air I had a MacBook Pro and I would occasionally turn off the display with a with shortcut key combo (Shift+Option+Eject) if I'm not mistaken. Since the I/O button replaces the Eject due to obvious reasons, is there another shortcut key alternative specific to the MacBook Air?

What I do is configure my hot corners so that I have to hold Command while dragging the mouse cursor to the bottom left corner.

Go to hot corners, select a corner and click the pull-down menu. One will say "Sleep Display" just hold Command or another modifier while you select it and bingo.
