i just came across this excellent tutorial on creating a standalone status bar application / menu (or "menulet" as some call it) and wanted to share. the tutorial is very visual, very step-by-step, and it's even up to date for xcode3.

Guys just not that this tutorial is based on Xcode 3 and the original post was made in 2008.

You may need to change a few things working in Xcode 4.6 (Latest release)

I've never used XCode, have no idea what I'm doing. My goal is to have a battery menulet that looks just like the usual Apple one, only with added colour coding (red, orange and green).

In that case - maybe do some reading on Xcode and programming in general?

I'm going to guess you have no or minimal programming experience as well, then? I think you're getting a bit ahead of yourself and you should go learn C. I suggest using Learn C The Hard Way, a free ebook: http://c.learncodethehardway.org/book/

If I'm incorrect that you're not already familiar with C, then you need to let us know what you are familiar with. Having never used Xcode doesn't seem like it should cause you to have so many problems as long as you've ever programmed anything before.

I've used that exact same article without problems. I'm certainly no expert and barely know Objective-C myself, but the basic principles are the same - Xcode 3 and 4 just differ a bit in how they accomplish them. Take a look at the Xcode User Guide and other resources from the built-in documentation to familiarize yourself with the design and layout.

I had to use a program for school once called 'Scratch', that's all the experience I have! I'll have a read of that e-book for sure.
