Does anyone have a list of UK programmers that will launch in the TV App when it comes to the UK later this year?

I remember seeing BBC iPlayer, My5 and itv during the keynote (I think) but im interested as to the others.

Also does anyone know when we can expect this to launch in the UK?

I only saw ITV Hub and My5 announced at the keynote. Didn’t see BBC iPlayer up there, so not sure that’ll be included. Amazon Prime should be, given the plug Apple gave the arrival of Prime. Netflix isn’t included as of yet.

I think we're going to be disappointed.

As mentioned, BBC was not shown on the Keynote slide - only ITV and 5. It's starting to look like the iPlayer app has been abandoned - no HLG demo for 4K samples and no requirement to log in in line with every other supported platform. We all know Now TV has also been abandoned from the state of it. Netflix is still a no show even in the US, there's no UKTV Play app and Amazon Prime is still to show up.

So, at the moment it's looking like the UK TV app will consist solely of new iTunes purchases, ITV and 5 with Amazon Prime maybe joining when it launches.

Oh yeah, it's going to be totally pointless in the UK for the foreseeable future. I saw that NowTV has been updated, checked it, and it must have been bug fixes or something as it was essentially still the ATV3 app.

I suppose the TV app will just be a nice way to view your own film and tv lists with the occasional prompt to watch some tat on My5 or ITV

Looks like My5 has been released on the Apple TV; not home so can’t check it out! Not that Channel 5 is worth having tbh haha...

Great news on having ITV hub - are there any plans on all 4 app for apple tv? Anyone has any info?

I know bbc iPlayer have app but they don’t have subtitles means I can’t use it :( (except limited sign zone programmes).

Do itv and channel 5 have subtitles option somewhere?

I've used the TV this evening and love it. The ATV will just get better and better. We have basic Sky at £10 but I don't use it at all beside playing cbeebies for my daughter. Everything else I watch is catchup and Netflix.

It's inevitable that 4oD will be added and that the program suggestions will get more clever. I want to see more programs related to my viewing habits than top 1o for every app.

Lastly I hope that ITV's image quality will improve and reach parity with iPlayer which, despite being 1080p looks very good.

Looks like Netflix is searchable via the TV app and you can add it to up next but it doesn't seem to track episodes, just has the open in netflix option.

Anyone else struggling to get My5 shows to display in the TV app?

I’ve been watching a show via the My5 app and expected it to show on the “Up Next” section but doesn’t for some reason.

BBC, Prime, ITV all work as expected.

I'm a little disappointed that the TV app doesn't incorporate your local library. I have a massive library of content stored locally on my MacBook from blu ray rips etc. I find it a real shame that I still need to juggle two main apps to access the majority of my content.
It also needs Channel 4 and Netflix integration before it truly becomes a universal app for all content.
Still a massive step in the right direction though!

Does everyone else still have the Movies iTunes and TV Shows iTunes apps on Apple TV?

I’ve still got these showing but had imagined they’d disappear now that their functionality was replaced by the TV app.

I think they're meant to stay. Fairly certain the demo video shows all 3 icons on the top row. Probably a sensible decision. I can imagine people complaining about them being removed, say people who only ever watch movies could get annoyed at having the app 'cluttered' with other content when they only wish to see their movie library.
You can aways move them to the bottom or tuck them away in a folder if you feel you don't need them now that the TV app is out.

Ah, ok, thanks.

I wonder if they will remove those old apps at some point in the future (iOS 12 maybe) - perhaps entirely retiring the iTunes brand and moving everything into either the Music app or TV app (at the same time as finally retiring iTunes on the Mac). If that is the grand plan, I’d imagine they’d move towards it incrementally so as not to confuse people.

BBC iPlayer is 720p at 5mbits. That's low, but nowhere near as low as C5 and ITV, which are 480p. No idea what bitrate they use, but it's rock bottom whatever it is. I'm guessing somewhere around the 1mbit mark. Channel 4's steamed stuff looks to use a very similar level of compression and resolution. Worst of all is UKTV, which is so low resolution and over compressed that it looks like a Video CD, if anyone remembers those.

By contrast, Netflix is 4K at 20mbit. The iPlayer 4K stuff, which starts this Sunday (not on the Apple TV) is 4K at 28 Mbit, which should look great. Hopefully this will mark the start of iplayer joining the modern world, and not just a one off. It's too bad Apple TV owners won't get to see it, but the BBC seem very focused on smart TVs for this roll out. They've even excluded big 4K boxes like the PS4 Pro, Xbox One X and Fire TV.

My first priority (strangely) is to have a single box and a single remote. My second priority is to watch shows in HD. My third priority is not to watch adverts.

So I bought the ATV (again) this week. The iPlayer app isn’t great, but it’s acceptable and the quality of streaming is terrific. The Netflix app is also acceptably good, it syncs across my other devices, and the quality of streaming is terrific.

The NowTV app is awful, but the streaming quality is OK.

The ITV and My5 streaming quality is not acceptable. And they have adverts.

Conclusion? There’s enough stuff to watch out there that if you’re not on my Apple TV (I’m talking to you, Channel 4) then I’m just not going to watch your stuff. And if you are on my Apple TV, but your streaming quality is poor (ITV and C5) then I probably not going to watch your stuff.

I find it oddly stressful to actively have to find things to watch rather than be told what to watch by the schedule. But I’m so far finding plenty on iPlayer and Netflix to keep me entertained. I’ll dip into NowTV from time to time (I have the Entertainment and Movie passes — £50 for six months), and I have Amazon Prime but rarely find anything there I want to see.

So farewell, ITV, C4 and C5. If you’re going to stream in crap quality or not at all, I’m not going to watch you. I have other options.

Apple would have to go bust for the iTunes brand to ever be retired.
I very much doubt the Movies and TV App will retire, the US have had the TV App a lot longer than we have and thing have remained the same in all that time and more than likely to remain for some time to come.

Don't be so sure - reports are still rumbling on that Apple will retire iTunes in 18-24 months in favour of apple Music: https://www.digitalmusicnews.com/20...050ed35055757d5a1578e4bac69f2adc3d1f503c9d714

Also, the TV app has replaced the videos app on iPad/iPhone so it wouldn't surprise me to see some kind of consolidation on the AppleTV (perhaps first eliminating the 'Computers' app).

Yeah it’s replaced the Videos app for playback but hasn’t replaced the iTunes Store which is essentially what the Movies and TV apps are on AppleTV.

When I watch a tv series on my iPad with the new TV app how do I make it automatic play the next episode. It just stops and they I have to press to play next episode.

Cheers
Jonny
