I have always played my library of iTunes media (e.g., videos) that are hosted on my iMac, from my Apple TV connected to my home theatre.

After updating my Apple TV to tvOS 14.5, my Apple TV sees my iMac under Computers and sees all of the media hosted in the Music app. But when I click to play anything, all I get is either a black screen or a spinning wheel.

Both are on the same home network, same sharing user ID, etc. I tried reauthorizing both the appleTV and my iMac (Big Sur 11.3), but no change.

The fact that I can see my iMac and its Media from my AppleTV, all the way to the song or video level, is interesting.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Thoughts?

So I had a chance today to try out an older AppleTV running 14.3. I tried to play media from my MBP this time, running Big Sur 11.3.

It does the same thing as I describe above. It would now seem to be the Big Sur 11.3 update that has broken my ability to play media from my Mac to my AppleTV.

Stay tuned as I continue to dig into this...

14.5 broke home sharing audio for me. After update my own media audio would be out of sync and with crackling sounds. I had to go back 14.4 to fix.

This happened to me as well.

Do you have Norton Antivirus? I found that the firewall ("Vulnerability Protection") blocks the media sharing, even with my local network added in the Exceptions tab. Turning off Vulnerability Protection lets everything play as normal.

I've had nothing but problems with Norton's firewall since their Big Sur updates...

I removed clean my mac (it has a protection component) and all works well now

**False Alarm. Back to delayed audio**

Question on this... I have several videos downloaded from App Store in my Apple TV Library on my iMac, and not only can I play them on the iMac, I can also play them on my Apple TV 4K, iPhone and MacBook Pro (all devices running latest OS, including Big Sur). I have Home Sharing turned on, using my iCloud account (I have separate iCloud & App Store Apple IDs...don't ask...). I'm also running Norton, and agree there have been a ton of issues with Norton and Big Sur, most of which seem to have been resolved by now (slow wireless bandwidth, issues with FaceTime, can't send email s with attachments using Microsoft Outlook, are a few I'm aware of).

However, I imported two MP4 videos into the iMac Apple TV App Library, and while they show and play fine on the iMac, I don't see them at all on the Apple TV 4K or the Apple TV App on any of my devices.

Does this just not work, or do I need to do something else with settings, or...is this Norton again?

Thanks!

Seems to be many issues all while playing through homeshare to an appletv4+. All my atv2 and Atv3s are fine. Just the ATV4 that has issues

The good news so far for those suffering sync and crackling issues is that the latest beta of tvOS 14.7 resolves this (Hopefully it stays that way).

Well it has for my 4K Apple TV’s I no longer have the crackling issues on since installing public beta 3.

the latest macOS Big Sur beta also fixes the crackling issue. Can’t say for sure on iOS/iPadOS as yet as my spare devices are running iOS 15 but I would hope 14.7 is going to fix them too.

Has anyone had this issue resolved with the new Beta's for MACOS 12 etc? Particularly the sync issue

i would assume the latest developer build / public beta of Monterey will be resolving at least the crackle issue. iOS 15 developer 2 and public beta no longer exhibit the crackle. Luckily I never encountered the sync issue but then again because of the crackle at the time I stopped using homesharing until they fixed it in 14.7 betas.

I have the newest Beta for MACOS12 and TVOS and the issue persists. I again went back to TVOS13 on my atv4 and it works fine with no lag or cracking on the audio when using TV App to AppleTV. I have no issues with the latest TVOS on the ATV3 or ATV2 I have. It would seem the MACOS12 and TVOS14 don't play well together
