Tweaks to a brand new mac?

Are there any recommended tweaks that you can do to a new mac? I know in a windows machine you can lower the percentage in the recycle bin and system restore to save more hard drive space. Disabling and changing certain features to to get the best performance out of windows. Are there any tips that can apply to macs?
