In iOS6, we were able to tweet directly from the notification bar. That feature was taken out of iOS7.

Will we get it back in iOS8?

As a feature of iOS 8, I doubt it. Fortunately, with extensibility, developers can create a notification center widget that could have that functionality. I have no doubts we'll see one.

Even though it's unrelated to iOS 8, the Social widget is available in OS X Yosemite.

Twitter and Facebook can update their apps to allow extensions in Notification center so you can do more than just Tweet and post a status update.

Unfortunately Extensions in Notification Center don't allow keyboard input. Those widgets could only open their apps to post a status update.

wth? that sucks. so if i have a note widget i wont be able to simply add a text within the widget? missed opportunity. didnt the guy interact with the ebay widget during the keynote?

Yeah, he used a button to bid. But there is no way to display a keyboard.

What about quick reply with messages? You can't build something like that into your app?

Possibly, yes. Twitter could push a persistent notification that allows you to quick reply. But it's a hacked sort of way.

But a quick button to tweet is still better than looking for the app from only the home screen. The process can still be the same pull down NC > tap tweet button > type tweet > send > press home button to leave NC or the app (multitasking will get you to your previous app quicker)

So when you share a picture now, you get the FB or Twitter share sheet to come up that is built into iOS. Can another app call upon that in their widget? Just not attach a photo and just make it a status update?

In theory, yes. But as there is no keyboard allowed in Today extensions, it wouldn't work.

That might work! I wonder if they allow that API for notification center extensions...

Why is the social networking widget in OS X but not iOS? Doesn't seem like Apple is being consistent with its features across platforms.

That's weird.. cause in Mavericks, you can do it all within that widget. Unless I'm not understanding what you guys are talking about...

OS X widgets have more capabilities. They can have keyboard access as well as some other stuff.

Yeah, sometimes Apple giveth, sometimes they take it away. It really depends on what they feel is the optimal workflow for people. Personally, I use widgets a lot, but I've never attempted a tweet or FB update in the Notification center - it just didn't make sense to me.

I didn't use that feature until really late in the iOS6 lifecycle. I was using it daily. I really miss that feature!

I miss the Tap to Post and Tweet from iOS... I mean sure I can use it on OS X...but COME ON..... 0__0
