It was a black iPhone, but Wayne, the repair tech, had a replacement White face plate. His company gets parts from Apple in advance in order to be ready for repairs.

yeah, as soon as I posted this they explained how he got the White Plate.

He actually mentioned it a while ago when he first got there, but they quickly brushed over it to get to the teardown. He said he has both white fronts and white backs, so essentially he could build a white iPhone 4.
