Game-streaming platform Twitch is set to bring a host of new features to its mobile app in an update currently rolling out across the globe.

The new version of the app for iOS brings a number of long-requested functionality tweaks, like the ability to stream directly from the mobile app, along with several visual changes, such as the introduction of a dark mode.

The update also brings Twitch Pulse, a social network feed that keeps users in the loop on breaking developments in the Twitch sphere via text and multimedia content, as well as providing links to other services like Imgur and Vimeo.

Other interface changes include new navigation bars for the Live, Pulse, and Browse sections of the app, and "swipe surfing" gestures for selecting videos and playlists, as well as returning to previously viewed streams. In addition, a new section called Instant Playlists offers a collection of videos that can be accessed by swiping down from the top of the screen.

Elsewhere, there's now language ranking in featured streams, so videos are organized based on languages and regions, and a more seamless way of viewing notifications.

Twitch says the new version of the app, which is a free download on the App Store, should be available to everyone by early July. [Direct Link]

Slowly but surely, Twitch.TV will return back to its Justin.TV roots. Can't wait to start using it again. Gaming isn't going away but the IRL broadcasts on Twitch are growing in popularity.

Ustream became too expensive for independents to stream and services like Qik are long gone. Live streaming to a page that doesn't require a Facebook account is getting harder and harder.

Can someone in the know let me know if Twitch still supports Adobe Flash Encoder like Justin.TV did. I'd like to setup a camera from my house so people can watch deer feed.

I'd like them to release an official Apple TV app as well. I use Twitchy but I'm not comfortable giving a third party my login credentials.
Very much this! I don't watch Twitch streams on my Apple TV precisely because I'm reluctant to give login credentials to random apps. And... video streaming... largest screen in the house... why can't we get these two together?

Hmm, if only there was a way of enabling BTTV emotes in the iOS app...

But hey, power of imagination. My head will just keep parsing them. PepePls

i hope pip is fixed soon and removal was not intentional. currently disabled.
I'm typing is in Safari on my iPad, with YouTube currently running PIP. I started it from YouTube.com (in Safari, running in "desktop mode"), and simply clicked the PIP button (rectangle arrowed down towards corner) in the lower right corner of the standard video display widget. Works fine.

Am I doing it wrong, wrong?

I was talking specifically about Twitch. The article is talking about the latest iOS update for Twitch and PIP is currently not working.

And it looks like it's fixed?

Similar to Amazon Prime, there is no "PIP button", but if you press the home button, the video will automatically go in to PIP mode.
