Twitter today announced that the Twitter app for iOS devices has been updated with a new "Lights Out" feature that makes the existing Dark Mode option even darker.

The new Lights Out toggle is available in the Settings section of the Twitter app and it can be used in conjunction with the current Dark Mode feature to make Dark Mode just a bit darker for OLED displays.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said in January that Twitter was working on a new Dark Mode option in response to complaints suggesting that the existing Dark Mode was more of a dark blue than a black.

It was dark. You asked for darker! Swipe right to check out our new dark mode. Rolling out today. pic.twitter.com/6MEACKRK9K - Twitter (@Twitter) March 28, 2019

The Dark Mode that existed before today's update is now the "Dim" Dark Mode in a blue/gray color, while Lights Out uses a pure black color palette. Twitter has also added an Automatic Dark Mode feature on iOS for turning on Dark Mode automatically based on timezone.

👋 Twitter, welcome to the dark(er) side. We're excited to finally share the updated dark mode, and @design will talk about it from (you guessed it) a *design* perspective on behalf of @sofo, @bhaggs, @davidk, and many other awesome teammates who brought this to life. pic.twitter.com/JCNhZ365I6 - Twitter Design (@design) March 28, 2019

Right now, the new Lights Out option is limited to iOS devices, but it should be expanding to the desktop and Android devices in the near future.

Must have been a server side switch. I turned on Night Mode but got the ugly blue. Force closed the app and opened it back up and it was black as night. I LOVE it. Next, iOS!

But why why why did they use a custom UI switch? That's not standard iOS interface controls! This baffles my mind!

They should have just provided a slider like they do for font size up higher, rather than the confusing "Dim" and "Lights Out" modes. Jack, oh Jack.... how did this pass QA testing???

Too late, Twitter. Tweetbot has had this feature for awhile. And it's a superior app too.

I switched to Tweetbot on Mac and do find it a bit better than the standard Twitter app. Not sure what is wrong with this company... they can't seem to quite figure it out.

It's a shame that Jack and team crippled third party Twitter apps though. But Tweetbot is still one of my favorite iOS apps.

is it fair to expect less battery consumption on OLED iphones with this new dark mode enabled?

I just hope dark modes always remain exactly that: optional modes. I can’t stand them. But choice is good, for those who prefer... either.

A welcome change! I always kept Twitter in Light Mode because it looked better than that half-arsed Dark Mode, but now...

Don’t stop there! I won’t be satisfied until it’s vanta black and the illuminated pixels on my display look like photons emerging from the dark void of nothingness at the beginning of time.

Interestingly enough, I have the option on my iPhone but not my iPad. Not that it would matter as the iPad is LCD, but still.

You got it backwards. I opened it on my phone and it was ugly black and I had to switch it back to proper blue.

I don't think it has rolled out yet.

It had rolled out. Worked on my iPad but not iPhone. It’s there now!

You have to restart Twitter to see the new option.

Thanks! I had done that. Even deleted and redownloaded. I think the update hadn’t “hit” by personal account at that time. It was working on my iPad for my non-personal account. It’s working now.

It's almost as if it's rolling out per-device; my iPad just got it this morning.
