twitter notifier as opposed to app?

I was wondering if anyone knows of a Twitter notifier app, instead of a full app. I was thinking more along the lines of something like the gmail notifier, instead of a full fledged app like Tweetdeck. All I want is some notification that I should check my twitter page, and I don't need to read the tweets in the app, nor send my own.
