Twitter today announced that it will be shutting down TweetDeck for Mac next month to focus on the web-based version of TweetDeck.

"Beginning July 1, the TweetDeck for Mac application will be removed," reads a banner at the top of TweetDeck for Mac. Twitter said users can continue to access TweetDeck on the web at TweetDeck.com. The banner may not appear until restarting the app, and there does not seem to be a way to dismiss the banner at this time.

In a tweet, Twitter said it is "saying goodbye to TweetDeck for the Mac app to focus on making TweetDeck even better and testing our new Preview," which refers to the redesigned version of TweetDeck being tested on an invite-only basis.
TweetDeck, acquired by Twitter in 2011, is a popular Twitter client that lets users view several side-by-side columns of tweets at once. The app has been distributed through the Mac App Store, but it will no longer be available starting in July.

As noted by 9to5Mac, one solution is to download the Unite app, which allows you to turn websites into native apps on the Mac.

Since developers can't simply delete a local app from my hard drive that has already been downloaded, please clarify what it means by "shutting down TweetDeck":

  • Just removing it for sale/first-time installation on the Mac App Store?
  • Completely disabling logins from the app, so it basically becomes useless?
  • Ending support & development for new versions of the app, but continuing to allow existing owners to log in?

I'm sure they'll disable logins or shut off API access just like they did for the original Twitter app.

The web version. I've been using it on PC for years and its fine.
My issue is that I really need a standalone app, for various workflow reasons that I won't bore you with. So a web version won't cut it. Is there anything else out there with similar functionality?

Look at the unite app which was referenced, that will turn the web version into its own app.

Yeah Tweetbot is nice, but it's great to use Tweetdeck sometimes getting a grand view of like 10 different search terms on Twitter, especially when following live stuff. Hopefully they keep the web version alive!

Maybe it's just being too old and set in my ways; but I still really prefer dedicated apps over a web browser where possible. But that's a losing battle. Guess I need to get with the times!

Just use one of the various Mac apps that will make an Electron app out of it which is essentially what it is anyway.

Sounds like they lost the one person who could update the certificates and resubmit the app the Mac AppStore every 4 or 5 years.
