Twitter is testing a new timeline layout in which photos are stretched to the edge of the display with no horizontal margins, mimicking the design layout of popular photo and video sharing apps, such as Instagram.

The new layout was shared by Jane Manchun Wong on Twitter, who often uncovers what features and changes Twitter is working on behind the scenes. The change is still in testing, but according to a screenshot shared by Wong, photos will now go edge-to-edge, compared to the current layout that features horizontal margins on either side of photos.

Separately, while Twitter announced this week it would be shutting down "Fleets," its stories-like function in August, the company is possibly eyeing a possible new feature, the most wanted by users.

In a tweet (via 9to5Mac), the company's product lead, Kayvon Beykpour, surveyed his followers as to whether they would subscribe to "Twitter Blue," the platform's monthly subscription service, if it offered users the ability to edit tweets for a few minutes after they were posted.

While there is no say as to whether the ability to edit tweets will ever become a reality, the company's product lead survey is certainly telling that Twitter is once again exploring the idea and attempting to garner public opinion.

Although it’s not quite the same, Twitterrific has had a “Delete and Edit Tweet” feature for years.

Why not just delete the tweet and make a new one with the correction for free?

The reason is that if you have a lot of followers often your original tweet has spread far and wide in only a few moments. Deleting that engagement or having retweets return "this user has deleted this tweet" is not great for your personal brand. It doesn't effect most of us, but for those who it does effect I think they'd probably be willing to pay for this feature.

Edge-to-edge doesn't look right. I remember when Flickr did that (briefly) when they moved to their new layout. A lot of people didn't like it. Then they changed it so that there was a small white border around each photo, and suddenly people were okay with it.

The ability to edit tweets isn't necessarily something I would be willing to pay for. (<--- hideously cheap me) So much easier to just delete/repost.

Why is Twitter trying to make their app more like other apps like Instagram and Snapchat, which I don't use specifically because I don't like them?

Twitter should just be Twitter and stop trying to emulate others.

Probably because of revenue? While I agree with you, they are always looking for more share of your free time.

This is the way.

The answers would likely be, either (1) the user can't be bothered to do that, or (2) hundreds of users have already liked/retweeted the original tweet, in which case being able to edit the content, after users liked the original content, is a bad idea ("like if you love puppies" => "like if you love Hitler").

It reminds me of a scene in Bruce Almighty.
Bruce: There were so many, I just gave them all what they wanted.
God: Since when does anyone have a clue about what they want?

For those who don’t recall, Steve Jobs wasn’t satisfied with relying on customer feedback.

Quite frankly, I agree. People can easily be swayed and change their minds on a whim. Also, popular doesn’t always equal better.

This would be like 15 years after Excel came out and Microsoft was still asking users if they would like the ability to sort rows or keep entering them in their desired order by hand.

If along with that they verify the account as well, I am in. Because if used correctly, Twitter is a treasure trove of information.

I have a feeling that the Disagree button needs to be moderated.

Is the member disagreeing that Twitter is a treasure trove, or are they disagreeing with what I am saying I am comfortable with? What’s that gonna make a difference to? 😂

$2.99 a month for: UPDATE tweets SET body = @updated_body WHERE tweet_id = @tweet_id;
Not quite. The backend changes required for a service that needs to scale on the level of Twitter is far more complicated than a change in app UI.

I was merely being flippant, the point being that for a company with the resources and size of Twitter, solving how to edit a Tweet should not be difficult. In fact I would not be surprised to learn they already have the facility to edit and they just don’t want to release it for whatever reason.

Considering they already have the capability to add, delete and delay Tweets, all of which are constituent components that you’d need to alter a Tweet hosted on a massively distributed platform it surely can’t be beyond them to add a feature like this after all these years.
