Twitter is testing a new feature that lets users respond to tweets with emoji, according to app reverse engineering expert Jane Manchun Wong (via SocialMediaToday).

Wong shared online a screenshot of the tweet reaction interface, which has an option to respond to a tweet with emoji like crying with laughter, shocked face, and praying hands.

"Retweet," "Retweet with comment," and "React with Fleet" options are also included. Fleet is in reference to Twitter's Stories-esque disappearing tweets that are currently only available in a small number of countries.

It's unclear whether the emoji would be posted as a normal reaction to a tweet or if it would appear as a pop-out panel, which is something Twitter has experimented with before. Twitter launched reactions for direct messages earlier this year.

As with all Twitter tests, the usual caveats apply: This is currently an internal experiment and there's no guarantee that the feature will ever make it to a public release.

Update: Twitter told The Verge that it is not actively working on emoji reactions. The code that was discovered was for a previous experiment that is no longer in use.

What Twitter needs to really work on is enforcing their TOS on every user, no matter who they are or how self-important they think they are.

But no, the shareholders must be kept satisfied, lest they take their money elsewhere and Jack ends up homeless. (Oh, such a shame.)

For what purpose?
If this is replacing the like I’m ok with it. But if someone’s tweet gets thousands of different reactions I’m not sure how Twitter would display it. I wish Twitter would employe something like upvote/downvote or like/dislike. That would make more sense than the ratio which most people probably don’t even know what ratio means.

I agree. But Jack doesn’t seem to care about celebrities like Ice Cube posting anti-Semitic garbage on his platform.

Twitter is filled with so much political garbage. Granted, Twitter plays host to a lot more than politics, but at least in that arena it's a cesspool of hostile, vitriolic behavior. I agree; if Twitter applied the rules equally, I might start to view them favorably. I guess it is what it is.

Jack reminds me of Billy Bauer from the Black Mirror episode Smithereens. Or maybe the character was inspired by him lol.

No. Just. No. Facebook “reactions” are annoying enough, especially as people use them obnoxiously. C’mon, Jack. It’s bad enough you don’t cancel a certain account for violating Twitter’s ToS, now you want to throw MORE into a dumpster fire? The sock puppets and bots will love it. 😑

I wish all social media would just die off already.

Dear Twitter, give us a fn EDIT TWEET OPTION! It's the 21st century. Thank you. Constantly having to delete tweets with typos is so annoying.

This is why there’s no edit tweet function:

Step 1: tweet “like/retweet if you love puppies!”
Step 2: get 10,000 likes/retweets
Step 3: edit tweet to read “like/retweet if you love Hitler!”

Limit the edit to 1 min after publishing, boom, problem solved.

Twitter needs to ban a certain public individual who IMO needs to be banned for misusing the platform repeatedly on a negative basis. Allowing people to public attack and threaten others is not in public interest - Maybe someday when Twiiter's stock value is threatened maybe Dorsey will take action.
Twitter is for Twits
