Twitter today announced that rather than shutting down the Vine app entirely as planned, it will be transitioned into a new app called "Vine Camera."

Vine Camera will allow users to continue to make six-second looping videos that can then be saved to the iPhone's camera roll or shared directly on Twitter. No other Vine features will remain.

The Vine app will also be updated with a new feature that makes it easier for Vine users to link accounts to transition from Vine to Twitter, with a tool for allowing Vine followers to follow Vine users on Twitter instead.

Existing Vine videos can be downloaded through the Vine app or the Vine website, and all Vines will continue to be available on the Vine.co site. Vines will be available for download through the app until the transition is made to Vine Camera.

Twitter first announced plans to shut down Vine back in October. Twitter allegedly entertained multiple purchase offers for Vine before deciding to create the Vine Camera app.

Well that's a bizarre choice that isn't going to float so well with Vine's users.

Vine as a network is VERY different than Twitter as a network.

Isn't it simply a case of cost cutting? The service is being shut down, so this provides a usable version of the app without it needing to be connected to a service.

Twitter isn't profitable.

How they are going to make money with a free Vine video service is questionable at best right now.

It transitions the very large Vine community into Twitter. While many might not make the jump, there's a large contingent of Vine fans who are breathing a bit of a breath of relief because Twitter + Vine Camera gives them a way to keep it going.

If only they would shut don twitter as well... Oh well one less crappy social network app to worry about...

This is actually pretty good news to me. Whenever I make a Vine, 99.9% of the people who see it, see it because it was posted to twitter as well.

This basically removes the secondary, redundant "Vine" network, which didn't really add much on top of Twitter itself which already supports video.

Vine should remain PORN network ... ;)

Wouldn't be better if the "6-sec video" become a new Twitter App "feature" rather than the external way of posting videos to the twitter network, for me to many apps, too confusing.

Vine: Hosts about 5 of the funniest videos I've ever seen. Also hosts about 1,000,000 of the most annoying. Don't let the door hit you...
