My dad has a 16gb iphone on 02

I have an 8gb iphone on 02 both 3g sets.

Was wondering if i can just swap sim cards so i have the 16gb?

Exactly.

Although his hand set is insured, so id need to claim in his name and swap them back!

We got them the wrong way around, although i guess i can not transfer contacts and txts?

You can move the content around....

basically, if you backup both iphones then do a restore of your back onto your dads phone and restore your dads backup onto the other....

The backup file contains settings, sms, etc

If you tried claiming on your dads insurance, they would be able to see that you've used a different sim in the phone and refuse to replace it

I dont see how they would know as id put his sim back in it before send it out
