I just got a 2018 (10.15) mac mini to replace a 2012 (10.12) mac mini. Its a HTPC connected to my living room TV which plays videos off an external USB HDD.
I have an iMac (10.13) which is my main machine.
I download stuff to my iMac and FTP to my mac mini USB HDD. This worked flawlessly for years.
Once I swapped mac minis, I at first couldnt even get FTP to work. Yes, I know FTP server was removed from OSX and even 10.12, which my original mini ran, didnt have it. And yet, over the years I have forgotten how I got FTP service to work on the 10.12 mini that let me FTP to it flawlessly all these years. I cant find any apps I installed, but it just worked.
The new mini I got SFTP to work and can log in no problem. But file uploads to it are under 100kb/s, ridiculous. File downloads are 10mb/s from the mini to the imac. So I can take files from the mini quickly, but I cant put them quickly any longer.
To troubleshoot I reconnected the old mini and connected FTP (again, no idea how this is working, maybe I did some terminal command and installs a long time ago?) no problem. But now the old mini wont upload past 100kb/s...wtf!?
I tried different FTP apps, even a windows one in VMWare. All have the same slow as hell upload speeds now.
I have tried SMB file transfers by just connecting to the mini and having it on the iMac desktop. When I try and copy files, it freezes, crashes, or just hangs at about 8.4mb complete (of a random 3.16gb file)
Torrents work fine, downloading anyway. Since I rarely ever get anyone taking from my torrents, its hard to test upload speeds that way.
I FTPed into my webserver hosted by a good company, and tried uploading to it...painfully slow again.
So it seems that somewhere, somehow, maybe the router (?) changed? I am ripping my hair out with this because it makes no sense.
What can i do to get some logs or test wtf is going on?
Speedtest.net for the iMac
ping 21
Download 66.72 Mbps
Upload 0.92 Mbps (this seems really wrong. i normally get 1mb/s upload max, this says 125kb/s!? Im supposed to have 10mbps)
Funny enough, same speedtest on the mac mini got 100/10Mbps down/up, normal.
Disconnected imac from ethernet and used wifi, speeds are normal and fast.
SO WHY IS THE IMAC SO SLOW!? It cant be the ethernet cable, it cant be.
