Couldn't care less in terms of being concerned but the lighter one that looks like a half space grey was a replacement my dad got a coupla months ago. Mine is an original iphone 5 from November 2012 that looks a lot like the other iphone 5 I had from not far around that time frame (sold to try nexus 5 and re bought another when evasi0n7 jb came out)

Of course the lighter one is more worn but I'm beginning to buy into there being different degrees of slate out there that I read long ago. The antenna bands are also more noticeable on the lighter one. Could be a production correction or just different factories making these things is my guess.

Thoughts?

There is a difference in color between the iPhone 5 (slate) and the iPhone 5s (space grey)

If you remember, slate was getting scratched and scuffed quite easily and the anodization was coming off causing major complaints by consumers. Apple took care of this issue, switched the color to "space grey", and offered it as a new color option with the iPhone 5s.

Space grey is more of a pencil lead color, while slate was more of a charcoal color.

Hope this helps

I know but these are both iphone 5's, the left one is not a 5S

Hard to capture home button and the lighter shade in the right light but here's mr blurry cam proof:

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple changed the anodization of iPhone 5's produced after the induction of space grey on the 5s, making them space grey as well.

I don't see why not as they certainly wouldn't keep producing a product with an inferior anodization process?

Maybe someone has some more information on this!

WOW that really is a noticeable difference! For sure nothing to be "concerned" about but interesting nonetheless. Probably covering their rear ends after the initial batch of iPhone 5 problems

does the iPhone on the right not have an antenna band on the top or am i blind?

Very peculiar I agree in the photo haha. But mine for sure has it. Must not have focused on that area/ weird lighting. But the overall color of the side is accurate to how it actually looks.

Manufacturers often make unannounced changes to products. This is essentially tacit admission that they screwed up the slate the first time around.

Thats why. the darker iphone 5 got dents even with good care so apple made a "cleaner" Version.

For having the iPhone for a few months, your Dad sure wears the crap out of it.

:D

That'll happen when you throw it in the same pocket with keys, a pocketknife, etc.

The amount of F's given are few to none it seems.

I already joked with him when he gets the iPhone 6, he'll have to just hold onto the 5 as a backup. It won't even be worth the amount we'd get for it relative to just keeping it around.

I thought I was reading an old thread. There was one almost exactly like this a few months ago. Same issue. New phone different shade of slate.

Last week I bought a Certified Pre Owned iPhone 5 from Verizon and it looked like a Space Grey 5s. I was very confused when I opened the box because my last iPhone 5 was dark and didn't look anything like Space Grey.

I ended up returning it because the screen was messed up, so I don't have any pictures, but here are some pictures of another iPhone 5 that is listed on Swappa that looks just like the one I returned. So, yeah, Apple must have made some changes to the color later in the production of the 5.

Definitely looks closer to space grey. Which is odd - my cousin got what appears to be a new iPhone 5 via Verizon's insurance (came in a shrink wrapped Apple box), and his definitely still looks slate.
