Howdy! To make it easier to read, here's a quick summary of the issue, and the details follow.
Issue (Synopsis): Finder.app freezes frequently and when relaunched, Two instances of Finder are present, but only one can be terminated, relaunched, or is acknowledged by the system.
---
Details:
After examining pre-existing MacRumors threads, it doesn't appear that anyone else is having this issue in Yosemite. I found a similar issue from two years ago: Finder won't open, shows up as 2 finders in "Force Quit Applications" box . However, simply logging out does not solve the issue for me.
I am using a Mid 2013 Macbook Air. I've attached screen captures of the 'About this Mac' as well as the 'Hardware Overview' and 'System Software Overview' from System Report, to provide relevant technical details about the system.
After a period of using the system (typically anywhere from 30 min to 2 hours), finder will freeze (shows 'Not Responding' on Dock Icon and Force Quit, and I will relaunch it, either through Terminal, Dock, Menu, or a utility application like DesktopUtility. Finder will relaunch and function as normal, but it will show two Finder instances on Force Quit. One of these instances is the Active module, and can be restarted, forcibly quit, etc. as one would normally do. The second/redundant cannot be forcibly terminated, and does not appear to be an active Finder.app process; if I close out of the one functional finder app in Force Quit or Terminal, the Finder process does not show up in Activity Monitor (maybe I am looking for the incorrect process, or there is a helper process that I am not aware of), & if I go the kill route for Finder.app on Terminal, the system indicates that Finder.app is not running (something along those lines).
From my recollection, this has been occurring sometime after I upgraded to Yosemite. I am not sure if it's a coincidence, because I can't quite pinpoint when exactly this has started, I've been tolerating the issue for "a while"; haven't really had any Yosemite-specific issues (knock on wood).
Does anyone know what the issue is, and how I can rectify this? I keep my system updated regularly, carry out regular system maintenance (Disk Utility, Onyx, etc.) to ensure permissions and preferences are as they should be. At this point, I have no idea what to do so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Didn't realize PDFs needed to be downloaded to view, so I've added the System Info below:
