So I have and 8-core early 2008 Mac Pro with 10 GB of memory in it. I've had some intermittent freezing issues for far longer than I should have tolerated, and then last night it froze again. After hard resetting it, it froze at the blue start-up screen twice or three times and then once at the grey screen before the apple logo pops up... And then it started fine... I was digging around and noticed that two of the RAM modules in DIMMs one and two on Riser A were running quite a few degrees warmer than the others according to iStat, and then I noticed that System Profiler was only reporting 6 GB of memory. My original configuration was 2 pairs of 2GB modules in DIMMs 1 and 2 on both risers and then the stock 1GB pair in 3 and 4 on riser A. I removed the hot pair and replaced them with the stock 1GB ones and started the computer. It reported 6GB, but this time there was actually 6 in it. So then I tried putting the "hot" pair in 1 and 2 on A and the other two identical ones on Riser B in 1 and 2, and it reports 8GB, but they were still maybe 10 degrees hotter than the other pair. Now I've swapped the pair from B with the ones in A and vice versa the original hot ones are only 2 or 3 degrees hotter than the other pair. Both are being recognized and all that, but seeing as the other pair ran so much cooler in the same spot, I assume there is something wrong still...
I've run the longer Apple hardware test a number of time to no avail. I've also run the computer with just the pair in question installed one per riser. No freezes as of yet, but I've never been able to find just one thing that hangs it... As of now the questionable pair is at 57C and 55C on riser B and the other pair are both at 54C on A... Am I right in saying A should always be a bit warmer due to its proximity to the GPU?
Is the RAM bad?
Is the original configuration I had incompatible with the 8-core MP?
Am I making a long enough post?
I hope somebody can follow all that and give me some insight into what I should do. I sincerely appreciate your time and advice.
