Joining my iMac G3, and G4 Cube are two new machines I picked up today!

Machine 1 is a Powermac G4 MDD, 1.25Ghz Dual Processor - 256MB - 80GB HDD

Machine 2 is a Powermac G4 Quicksilver 867Mhz - 128MB - 60GB HDD

Will be posting more about them shortly, I know they have had RAM upgrades, but I just brought them in the door, and need to clean them up a bit before I get them ready to use.

EDIT: Almost forgot! I paid $50 for both of them, in working condition!

Just a little update, I got the MDD going (typing this on it), it had 1GB of RAM in it, but thanks to the hundreds of sticks of RAM a local PC shop gave me a few weeks back, I was able to max it out at 2GB. Getting ready to install Leopard.

This machine is going to become my "daily driver" so-to-speak. Really only going to use it for browsing Facebook, Craigslist, forums, and doing web development tasks.

Is it the Firewire 800 or 400 DP 1.25? I'd say the latter is better as it has 2Mb L3 cache.

I had the 2Mb L3 version and it was a terrific machine - mine was used as a graphic design workhorse - and I don't mean the odd bit of photo tweaking but full print production duties - it was more than capable.

This one threw me off a bit before I purchased it, because based on the spec sticker on the rear of the machine, it's stock configuration is that of the FW800 MDD. However, it does not have Firewire 800. BUT it DOES have 2MB of L3 Cache.

What are you going to do with the Quicksilver?

I am really not quite sure, I have yet to even power it on, I was tired from the 4 hour drive going to get these machines...On the interstate in my 1975 Jeep...Doing 50mph in a 70mph area, haha. I know it works though.

I did however upgrade the RAM to 1GB last night though.

It'll take 1.5GB if you didn't know that already.

I'm using a G3 as a server (with OS X Server installed). I've got a SATA PCI card in it and one of those converter brackets that give you eSATA ports. Connected to that is a 2TB RAID with WD Red hard drives.

Your QS could run Leopard Server.

Just a thought…

That was a thought of mine, do you by chance know where I could get a card for this that wouldn't require me to flash it? I do currently have a home file server setup, but it would be pretty awesome to use this for that.

eBay. Just have to pay attention. You want a PCI SATA card, but a lot of the ones you find are PCI-e or PCI-x.

Sonnet has the Tempo card, but anything you find that has a Mac sticker on it should work. Adaptec will work.

Wow! Those are some very cool macs! I have an MDD, but unfortunately it seems to have a dead power supply, which seems to be pretty common. I would have it fixed, but it's too expensive to be worth it for me.

Collecting PPCs (Even dead ones sometimes) is so addictive for some reason...

I'll defer to @LightBulbFun but I'd be uneasy on that one. Generally, Adaptec card with Mac ROM have a p/n that ends in U.

I tend toward Acard as an alternative to Sonnet, and in fact I've long suspected that the Sonnet ATA cards I have are rebadged Acard(perhaps tweaked to Sonnet specs). I forget how they denote Mac cards, though-I'll defer to @Intell on that one.

This thing surprisingly runs pretty darn snappy, even at a 1920x1080 resolution. I will say though, that after typing on a 2016 MacBook with that new "butterfly mechanism" keyboard, it is super weird typing on an Apple Pro Keyboard.

Yeah, they're all pretty much PCI-E. The Sonnet Tempo is a little more than I'd like to spend on it.

EDIT: What about this guy by Adaptec? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Adaptec-AA...309538?hash=item1c6ff37162:g:NcMAAOSwCGVX3Fwb

that card will not work with your MDD out of the box

however it looks to be based off of some sort of Silicon image chipset which might possibly be flash-able to work in your Mac, but a quick google around does not show much info on what chipset it has and sadly theres a sticker over where that info would be...

so can your BW G3 with a CPU upgrade :D

the Sonnet 2 port SATA card that we all know and love is just a Purple version of the Firmtek seritek 1S2, really good card those, work all the way back to System 7 :)
