I have a new to me Macbook Pro 5.5, so mid 2009 to 2010 model (how can I find out exact date of manufacture?)

It's all been wiped, I'm ready to roll but I believe that as I don't have an OSX asociated with my Apple ID I can't just install Mountain Lion without buying it (it was on here an that's what it wants to install)

So first Q:

What OSX is best for me? Going to be using it for live music and web browsing.

Mountain Lion or Snow Leopard?

I am partial to Snow Leopard myself, mainly for the ability to run PowerPC based programs as well as Intel.
