two problems with Mail- please help

First, I have to click on Message viewer every single time in order see the Mail Box. Second, when I try to restart or shut down, it would say unable to close mail, when I click on force quit, it does not close mail. any one knows what is going on? I did not have this problem before. Thanks a bunch.
