Two thunderbolt displays on 2013 Air failing

I have a "mid 2013" macbook air with 8Gb RAM running 10.9.2

I normally use it in clamshell mode with a 27" thunderbolt display. If I try to daisy-chain a 2nd thunderbolt display, it doesn't work. The second screen stays blank.

Apple clearly say here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5219#18 that mid 2012 and later Airs should power two thunderbolt screens.



Does anyone have any experience of this ?
