I'm trying to connect m1 mini with a Asus montior (vg289q 4k 60hz ) and using a Type C to HDMI cable (support 4k 60hz)
However in system preference the refresh rate is capped at 30 hz.
I could select 60 hz if it is a hdmi to hdmi cable.

I'm not sure what's the problem. Is it because type c to hdmi is not supported at 60hz?

IF you're using only one monitor (the Asus), use the HDMI port, since that gives you 60hz.
AND... it also leaves an additional USBc port "free"...

What cable did you get?

If you don't want to use the HDMI port for some reason (like it's already used for something else) consider a USB-C 4K120 adapter. They're very good at doing 4K60 (but not 4K120 because macOS?).
