Typing foreign characters on iMac

I often need to type in Spanish and French as well as English. On an iPad it's easy as the accented characters share the same keys as the English characters. Does anyone know how best to get foreign letters when using an iMac desktop with standard keyboard (running Maverick).

The same as iPad. Hold the key for a few seconds.
