Is TextEdit the Mac replacement for Microsoft Word or is there another program that is better suited for typing out papers and such?

TextEdit is more the Mac equivalent of Notepad or Wordpad. MS Office 2008 for Mac has Word. There is also Pages in iWork, as well as others.

well, you could get Microsoft Office 2008 for mac.

it includes word and is suited for the Mac Environment.
if you really want to, you can get that.
you can try open office. which is also a word alternative

or my personal favorite, Pages, from the iWork suite.

do a bit of forum search and you can learn more about these programs
